Are UK Prize Competitions Legal?

UK prize competitions are a long-established way to win prizes, and when they are run properly they are entirely above board. This guide explains the structure in plain English and shows where to find the full detail on the TopDraw site.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Always read the [terms and conditions](/terms-and-conditions) for the specific competition you are entering.

How UK prize competitions work

A UK prize competition typically involves entrants paying for a ticket or entering through a free route, with a winner selected after the competition closes. The competition must be structured so that it does not fall under gambling rules.

TopDraw runs each competition with a fixed prize, a fixed ticket price, a clear ticket cap, a closing date and a free postal entry route. These elements are shown on every competition page.

Why terms and conditions matter

The [terms and conditions](/terms-and-conditions) for a competition set out who can enter, how entries are processed, how winners are selected and how prizes are claimed. They are the authoritative reference if there is ever a question about a result.

Always read the terms before entering a competition for the first time. They are written to be readable rather than dense.

Free postal entry routes

The [free postal entry route](/free-entry) is part of how TopDraw competitions are structured. The postal route is genuinely free, and a postal entry has the same chance of winning as a paid entry. This is not a token gesture; it is a real entry path that some entrants use every week.

If you would prefer not to pay to enter a competition, the postal route is the right way to take part.

Responsible play and 18+ participation

TopDraw competitions are open only to UK residents aged 18 and over. We take responsible play seriously and provide self-exclusion controls in your account. The [responsible play](/responsible-play) page explains the tools available, including how to take a break or stop entering.

If competitions are starting to feel less like fun, please use those tools.

Winner publishing and prize claims

Winners are published on the [TopDraw winners](/winners) page after they have been notified privately and the prize claim has begun. Each entry shows a display-safe name and the winning ticket number, so you can see real results from real draws.

Past competitions are also archived for transparency.
